Three Things -- Cold, Smell, Tri

A few of you are doing Three Things Thursday and I LOVE this idea! I can do a mid-week blog entry about three things
  1. I'm still fretting about my wardrobe for Sunday. Thanks to EVERYONE for all the advice and opinions about what to wear. It looks to be even colder than originally reported...in the 30's at gun time...maybe 50's by race end. Still freekin' cold in my book!

I'm thinking throwaway gloves are a must as is a headband of some sort. I can deal with cold legs, but cold hands and ears? Unacceptable. Walter just told me he'd run the first 3 or 4 miles with me then take anything I want to get rid of...God I love this guy.
  2. My house STILL smells like skunk in places. I cannot begin to tell you all of the strategies we've used to get rid of the skunk smell...We've sprayed vinegar around and under the house several times, changed the A/C & heater filters five times, spread coffee grounds under the house (this seems to work best, or at least it masks the smell best). We've stripped and caulked all openings so that errant drafts cannot enter the house, and still, I can smell the aroma of the blessed beast in various places...GAH! On Tuesday, the smell in our bedroom was so bad that I couldn't take it any more, and we moved our bed out of our bedroom and into the office, where we've slept all week. We've shampood the carpet and are in the process of moving things back, but still...WHEN WILL IT END? I think I should leave town...oh and did I mention that we're hosting the annual family Hannukah dinner next Friday. Maybe a week of cooking things in oil will rid the house of skunk-smell...
  3. Even though I'm completely unprepared for this upcoming Las Vegas 1/2 Mary,  I haven't forgotten about doing a Tri and I think I found a perfect one...and even better, I think I have several of the herd interested in doing it with me. IronGirl has announced it's 2010 season and has a sprint-tri (800m swim/30k bike/5K run) at Lake Las Vegas in May. Good things about the tri? It's a sprint, so it's doable. It's in May, which gives us time to prepare. And best of all? The swim portion is in a Lake, a manmade one at that, so there are no sharks! Emails among the herd circulated today and I'm pretty sure Clarence and Alberta are IN!
I've gotta go overpack for the weekend now. I'll try to send one report from VEGAS BABEEEEE before the race.

  1. not totally prepped for the vegas 1/2, either. tight left hammie, and a soft jelly-belly(un-tight abs). may my initial corral number of 29 was accurate. we arrive late tonight. maybe we'll hook on sat.? check the crap tables.

  2. When dealing with sherpas who take your "excess" gear when it warms up, I've found that a gallon sized zip lock bag is perfect to stash in your pocket and load up with all of your stuff to hand off (if it is a shared-sherpa, throw in the back of a car with others deal writing your name on it in sharpie works well). This way they can easily carry it.

    Good luck!

  3. When I received the email of the latest Irongirl events, I got bummed out seeing one was going to be held right here in Lake Michigan in July. Oh well, must stay focused on my goal.
That skunk shirt must have done some major biz in your house! Best of luck with that-ewwwwww!

  4. I realize our definitions of cold are different, but that looks like lovely running weather to me. In the right gear, that is...

  5. Have you contacted an exotic animal vet or even park rangers for their recommendations? The rangers have to have been skunked a time or two.

Good luck this weekend. You may be pleasantly surprised with the weather and your effort in the race.

  6. I have several friends who did the Las Vegas Iron Girl in 2008. They had a blast!

Yeah, it's cold here... we're actually under a freeze warning for tonight. Bah!

  7. What are you talking about, you're totally prepared! You're going to rock it. So nice that you have someone who will take your discarded clothes--awwww.

Yay for a Tri! If you like that one enough to do a longer one, I'll be at Barb's race (70.3) in NorCal on July 31st! I think you'll really like them. Be warned like running, they can be addicting. (and expensive)

  9. Good luck this weekend, that's so sweet of Walter to run with you and take all your unneeded gear. I loved that the sprint tri I did had the swim portion in the lake...no sharks or currents!

  10. Have fun!! I'm sure you will be seeing lots of Elvi.
I think there are skunkbusters of some sort that can defumigate your house. my boss' home got blessed by a skunk last year some people came and took care of the smell.

  11. A Tri? That's exciting news! That should certainly help you focus your goals for at least the next few months.

And I'd like to borrow Walter for my next marathon. I talked to my wife once about doing that at the SD RnR. She laughed. Hysterically.

Good luck this weekend! Have fun!
