Here's What I'm NOT Doing

I am NOT running the AFC 1/2 Marathon this weekend.

I have some mixed feelings about this.
On the other hand, I'm a little wistful and sad.
  • The AFC Half was my first 1/2 marathon; it was the first 1/2 mary Betty and I ran together. And while we (the herd) had run several 5Ks by the time we got to that first AFC 1/2, it really was the race that turned the whole casual-let's-consume-10X-more-calories-in-breakfast-and-mimosas-than-we-burned running into something slightly more serious (although we still do the breakfast thing!)
  • The Neon-DayGlo-Lime-Green race shirts made their first appearance in that 1st AFC Half and I feel like I'm letting my racing shirt down.
  • I've run it for the last three years in a row including last year's miracle run.
  • Lots of local running peeps are going to the race expo today or tomorrow, and as crowded and crazy as they are, I do love me a good race expo.
  • This year, the weather promises to be almost summer race-perfect with the never-ending May-Gray, June-Gloom that has permeated through July and now into August.
All that being said, I am nowhere near ready for a 1/2 marathon this weekend. I'm really still recovering from the San Fran 1/2. So I'll have to just live the race vicariously through those who are running (BIG shout out to Alberta, who is running this weekend!)

I am NOT finished with any of my course syllabus

I have no idea what else to say about that, other than I still hope to have them all finished by the end of the weekend. I've never managed this feat before (having syllabi finished before our professional development week begins), but it would be nice.

I am NOT worried about DramaGirl starting high school

Really, I'm not. Betty is her principal, why should I be worried?

I am NOT turning 48 today

OK...that one is a lie. I am. I'm pretty much OK with it, but the last day or so I've been thinking about what it means to be 48 years old. I don't feel 48. Lord knows I don't act 48 (or maybe I do, and I just have some old-fashioned, media-manipulated conceptualization of what I should be acting like as 48 year old mother of two teenagers.)

48...geez...how did THAT happen?

  1. Oh, to be only 48 again. Sigh. Though back then I was still huge and out of shape.
Syllabus? I thought the Texas board of education had done away with those, since syllabus implied thought, logic, and progressive thinking.

  2. It's your birthday?? Have a FANTASTIC day!!

Is Drama Girl nervous about having your best friend keeping an eye on her at school? ;-)

I'm sorry you're not running AFC. I know how you feel. It was my first 1/2 too. Two years ago, Harbor Island was an OVEN. It was pure torture. Last year was better and I had more fun. It is a little sad not to run it this year.

I am considering coming down for that Fire Run. I'll let you know. I really enjoyed the beers and breakfast burritos with the Heffers.

  3. Betty says...

Drama Girl is having a blast! I love seeing her! And you are the hottest 48 year old out there!

    Have a wonderful Birthday!

  4. Happy birthday! No way are you turning 48! I hope your day is great!

I think it's a good call on missing the 1/2. That is always a tough one to do. I, on the other hand, am running against my better judgment. With the BlogHer hoopla, I haven't run in two weeks. Yikes! Will miss seeing you out there!

  5. Damn! I missed your birthday? Usually, the only way I know is notification from FB. So, sorry! But, happy birthday girl. I hope it was fabulous. I'm not far behind you, you know that.
I feel ya on the pain of missing the 1/2 marathon this weekend. It's a drag, especially when you see friends doing it. Rest up, your body/legs/feet/mind will reward you later. ;)

Since you're taking the day off from doing a 1/2 marathon.......go spontaneous and jump out of a plane!!!

  8. Happy Birthday! I missed it on FB, too. Well, we have all month to celebrate, right? Age just sort of creeps up, doesn't it? It's worth celebrating. You're still younger than me.

I'll be waking up at the butt crack of dawn to volunteer at WS#1 again this year. I understand the mixed feelings about not running certain events. This is not one of them for me, but I get it.

Hahahahaha! I'm fifty, but I'm a dude, so I can be fat and hairy in weird places and it's still okay, which is great, because I'm all of those things!

Happy Birthday, Sister! Your best years are ahead of you ...

... and zey vill CRUSH you!1!

    Hahahahaha!

  10. Belated birthday wishes. 48 feels a lot like 47, though it does mean you're closer to the mid-century mark, if that sort of thing freaks you out.
